Rekindle love
The Mango Tree Promise
In the quiet village of Umuaka, where the sun always smiled and the breeze smel!led like ripe pawpaw, two children made the world brighter just by being in it. Their names were Ada and Emeka.
From the moment they could walk, they were like twins from different mothers. If Emeka was chasing butterflies, Ada was right behind him. If Ada climbed a tree, Emeka was already at the top waiting to te@se her. But there was one spot they loved more than anywhere else—the big old mango tree in Ada’s compound.
That tree was m@g!cal to them. Its thick branches made the best sh@de, and its mangoes? Oh! Sweet like honey and juicy like watermelon. It was their meeting place, their hideout, their secr!et palace.
One afternoon, after school, they sat under the tree sharing a ro@sted corn. Emeka had a m!sch!evous smile.
"Ada," he said, picking up a f@!len mango, "one day, I’ll marry you."
Ada burst into laughter, her eyes twinkling. "You? Marry me? You don’t even know how to cook!”
"I’ll learn!" he said pr0udly. "I’ll make you pepper soup and bring you the biggest mango in the world!"
She g!ggled and pointed at the mango in his hand. "This one is tiny. Try again."
They laughed, and Emeka reached up, plucked a bigger mango, and handed it to her like a prince giving a royal gift. “De@l?”
Ada smiled. “Deal.”
That day, they made a secret promise: every year, no matter what, they would meet under the mango tree—just to talk, laugh, and share a mango.
But seasons change, and so do people.
One day, Emeka’s father got a job in the city. The news came like a loud thun!!derclap.
“Are you really going?” Ada asked, trying to hide the tears in her voice.
“I have to,” Emeka said softly. “But I’ll write to you. And I’ll be back. I promise.”
At the village square, as the lorry engine rum!bled, Emeka waved from the back with a small mango in his hand. “Don’t forget our tree!”
Ada waved back, holding her mango tightly. “I won’t!”
The mango tree stood tall, its leaves ru!stling gently, as if sealing their promise with a whisper.
